Dr. William L. Barrett is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology and Medical Director of the UC Barrett Cancer Center at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Barrett received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Barrett' s training included an internship in General Surgery at the University of Cincinnati followed by residency in Radiation Oncology at the University of Cincinnati and fellowship in brachytherapy at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He has been on the faculty of the University of Cincinnati since 1992 and has experience in treating patients with most types of cancers. Dr. Barrett's areas of particular interest include cancer of the prostate, cancer of the head and neck and the use of radiation seeds as well as external radiation therapy for a number of cancers. Dr. Barrett has focused on cancer education for the general public as well as physicians, students and trainees. He has contributed to scientific advances in cancer research.
Dr. Barrett' s overwhelming priority has been to reduce the suffering and mortality associated with cancer in the Greater Cincinnati region while encouraging the community to embrace the challenge of making Cincinnati a destination for cancer care.
In 2015 Dr. Barrett initiated an independent second opinion service for patients with newly diagnosed cancers at no charge. The service evolved into Cincinnati Cancer Advisors in 2020 and currently services over five hundred patients per year. This novel concept of a platinum level consultation with no attempt to recruit the patient for treatment and without any financial barriers is unique and serves our community in altruistic fashion.
