Stone Temple Pilots - Sex Type Thing

Stone Temple Pilots have often had dark and disturbing lyrics, but none quite as viscerally so as “Sex Type Thing,” which Scott Weiland always maintained was a way of speaking out against date rape by taking the view of a deranged assailant. (There are unconfirmed stories that Scott wrote this about a girlfriend of his who told him a horrifying story of her own assault). It had often been reported that Weiland was often torn by how people would positively react to the song, because it made him feel as if they’d missed the point. To drive it home that the song should be unsettling, Scott would sometimes dawn a dress and smear lipstick all over his face before performing the song live.
This was the first video for Stone Temple Pilots and directed by Josh Taft, and for many, it was such a heavy and aggressive introduction, it confused audiences into thinking they were a heavy metal band. What I loved, is that any time the band was asked to come on TV for an interview, they often brought acoustic guitars to broaden the message of what kind of group they were.
