Hugh Jackman Coming Back As MCU Wolverine? What Do His Recent Posts Mean?

A.D. had a tweet blow up in nerd circles over the last couple of days. He noticed Hugh Jackman posting some stuff on Instagram that definitely hints at the possibility of him returning as Wolverine in a Marvel Studios project. A.D., like many fans, immediately started asking questions. Hugh Jackman posting Wolverine artwork? And then a picture of himself with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige? What could it all mean? Would he really want to do it? Is he too old?

Jackman played Wolverine from 2000's X-Men to 2017's Logan, and was supposedly done playing his iconic mutant character. With Marvel Studios getting the X-Men movie rights back after parent company Disney acquired Twentieth Century Fox, most fans have been assuming that Wolverine (and the rest of the X-Men) would be recast for a new series of X-Men films. That's probably still what's going to happen, but there are a couple of interesting angles this story could take.

With the Disney+ series Loki, the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Marvel is definitely about to start playing with the idea of the multiverse, and multiple versions of characters. Rumor has it that the new Spider-Man movie will have MCU Spidey Tom Holland interacting with Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus, Jamie Foxx as Electro, and Wilem Dafoe as Green Goblin (all villains from previous versions of the Spider-Man film franchise). Some even say that we will see him meet previous Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, as alternate universe Peter Parkers. This could open the door for all kinds of past Marvel actors to make cameos, as Spider-Man and Doctor Strange explore alternate realities and meet various characters.

Deadpool 3 could be another place for a Hugh Jackman appearance. Deadpool is the only part of the Fox X-Men universe Marvel plans to continue. How, or if, Deadpool fits into the MCU remains to be seen. Normal rules don't really apply in a Deadpool story, so Jackman's Wolverine could pop in as a joke, with Deadpool breaking the fourth wall and acknowledging it to the audience. Or maybe Deadpool movies will always take place in the old Fox movie universe, which would make it easy for Jackman to be part of the story. Plus, Jackman and Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds are pals, so who knows.

Much to consider...
